Search Engine Optimization

From Dictionary.com: search engine optimization Part of Speech:  nDefinition:  the process of choosing targeted keywords and keyword phrases related to a Web site so the site will rank high when those terms are part of a Web search;

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. This does not fall into the same category as Search Engine Marketing or "SEM", which we rarely recommend. There are continual changes to the way search engines rank websites, and it's our job to keep up with the changes. It's also our job to make sure that you are aware of the reality of SEO. Yes, the top 5 results, and consequently the #11 position, in organic listings are the best places to be, but how you get there is equally as important as being there. As an SEO service provider, we will not enlist tactics that are considered unethical or "black hat". These may get you those sought after results quickly, but the price is normally a "burn bright and fast" effect AND what can be catastrophic to most companies, being black listed by Google. (By the way, as of this writing Google had over 65% of search engine market share, so we focus almost solely on Google for ranking results).

Good, effective, "white hat" or ethical SEO takes time for results to occur. Even marketing something like liver pudding in Scranton, PA (I know sounds awful, but we have a customer who sells it), that may not be a popular search takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to become indexed in Google and can take longer for any SEO to take root.

A word of caution: If you receive an offer that sounds too good to be true, if most likely is. For example, if you receive a phone call that a company will submit your site to over 150 search engines and get you to page one of Google in 48 hours...run! More often than not, the company is doing something that Google is not going to find kosher with the potential result being looked at unfavorably by Google.
