Summer Reading Program Activities for Youth

Imagine, Create, Participate! Youth Program

This program is designed for independent readers who may enjoy picture books and are beginning chapter books. Our goal is to encourage the youth to read for pleasure during the summer and to retain their reading skills. The crafts and activities in these sessions will be more involved.

Week 1 – Now You See It (Visual Arts)

Tuesday, July 7th @ 1:00
Each child decorates a letter from our slogan, “Imagine, Create, Participate!”. All letters will be strung together to act as a banner to display for the entire duration of the Summer Reading Program.

Week 2 – Now You See It (Visual Arts)

Tuesday, July 14th @ 1:00
Sign up your child to participate in creating a Community Mural. The completed mural painted by children of every age will be on display during the Family Art Show on July 24th

Week 3 – Now You See It (Visual Arts)

Tuesday, July 21st @ 1:00
Turn squiggles into art by drawing a whimsical line on a sheet of paper then trading with another who turns the squiggle into something fun.

Let’s see what we can create when everyone adds their touch. Each child will start a picture then pass it on. When everyone in the group has added something to each picture, the works of art are given a name. These fine creations will be on display during the Family Art Show. After the event, the masterpiece is yours to take home.

Week 4 – I’ve Got Rhythm

Tuesday, July 28th @ 1:00
Tune into a song when kids try and guess the name from just a couple notes.
We’ll test memory and instrument knowledge when we play the add on game of “I’m taking to my music lesson a…”

Learn everyone’s name with a rhythm rhyme full of stomping and clapping
Everybody get up and move to the beat with a call-and-response chant!

Nothing says summer like the call of serenading crickets. You can chime in with the chirping choir with our Cricket Chirper craft.

No Program for Tuesday, August 4th

Week 6 – Ham It Up!

Tuesday, August 11th @ 1:00
Explore problem solving and a little bit of acting when each child is given a section of a well-known tale. They’ll have to put themselves in order and re-tell the story.

Every actor needs to stretch out their mouth before performing. What better way to warm up then with a bunch of Tongue Twisters!

We’ll take turns putting on a puppet show but we’ll have to make our Spoon Puppets first!

Week 7 – Dance and Move

Tuesday, August 18th @ 1:00
We’ll make our own pom-poms then join the West Pittston Ram’s A-Team cheerleaders in a cheer!

Week 8 – Free Play

Tuesday, August 25th @ 1:00
Children will use a squiggle drawing as a starting point for a drawing of an imaginary animal, which they will name and tell a story about.
What kind of masterpiece can your child create from what otherwise would have been discarded materials?
